Life vs Toast

April 8th, 2011

Just recently I’ve been getting hugely excited about domestic appliances. I’ve bought a new Dualit toaster, a new washing machine, a coffee grinder, and I’m thinking about getting a bread maker.

I don’t quite know what’s bringing on this sudden spate of domesticity. Is it because I’m getting a little bit older, and maybe starting to think about settling down? That seems a little bit premature – after all, one fairly major prerequisite of settling down is that you have someone to share it with, and the fact is that right now I’m somewhat lacking in a significant other.

Not that that really matters of course, I’m still perfectly happy on my own, even though I’m beginning to see all my friends from school and college start to get married and settle down, and one or two are even thinking about having kids. I’m still living the life I wanted – I have a nice flat and I love my job. And it’s great that I can start to “settle down”in the comfort of my own home.

My next purchase, I think, will be a DAB digital radio. That way I can listen along to the songs of my youth, and reminisce at the sense of promise I once exhibited. Alternatively, I can listen to the music of today and enjoy the really rather good life I’ve got. I don’t need a partner in order to achieve validation. I have a successful career. And I know life’s not just about the material – I don’t just want to buy stuff in order to fill a void. Do I?
